Cikauman, Seranoman and Kosegu
Originating from Pesantren Binorong Banjarnegara (Islamic boarding school), the Master of the
Banjaran Pencak Silat style K.H. Busyro Syuhada moved to Kauman, Yogyakarta in 1872. He
developed strong and capable students to inherit his Pencak Silat skills. Eventually, a Pencak Silat
perguruan or school named Cikauman was established in 1925, led by two of his finest students,
Master A. Dimyati and his brother Master M.A. Wahib. The Cikauman school produced numerous young masters who then branched out and formed the Seranoman Silat School in 1930 to expand and reach out to a wider population. These two silat schools grew rapidly, garnering lots of students. Young silat masters were groomed from the two schools, who then formed their own schools, the most prominent among them being the Kosegu Silat School established in 1951.

One of the founders of Tapak Suci |
With an intensive approach as well as the consideration that the Muslim community should possess physical strength to oppose the communist forces that was provoking the Muslim community at that time, thus the idea to reunite the strength of each silat school into one strong Perguruan was initiated.
Thus, the Tapak Suci Silat School was established on 31st July 1963 as the continuation of the various silat schools of the Cikauman Style. Tapak Suci quickly spread and expanded throughout Yogyakarta and other regions.
In 1966, the first National Tapak Suci Conference was organised, which was attended by delegates from various regions all over Indonesia. The conference successfully formulated the consolidation of the organisation at the national level as well as changed the name of silat school to “Gerakan & Lembaga Perguruan Seni Beladiri Indonesia Tapak Suci Putera Muhammadiyah”.
At the ‘Sidang Tanwir Muhammadiyah’ in 1967, Tapak Suci Putera Muhammadiyah was formalised as an autonomous organisation under the Muhammadiyah Organisation as Tapak Suci Putera Muhammadiyah was capable of developing future cadres of Muhammadiyah. In 1969, Tapak Suci became affiliated with the Indonesia Pencak Silat Federation (IPSI), and was recognised as one of the 10 Historical (founding) Perguruans. In 1975, the perguruan finally changed its name to ‘Perguruan Seni Beladiri Indonesia TAPAK SUCI Putera Muhammadiyah’.
The Birth of Muhammadiyah Singapore
On 25th May 1957 a group of students from Madrasah Raudatil Atfal and students of the late Ustaz Abdul Rahman Harun, Ustaz Rijal Abdullah and Ustaz Amir Esa had organized an Eid Adha Hari Raya Gathering. In that gathering the students had unanimously agreed to strengthen their group and officially established a Sunnah/Salafi movement in Singapore.
Pursuant to that meeting, the name MUHAMMADIYAH was chosen and submitted to the Registrar of Societies. It was considered most suitable and relevant. In that meeting a protem Committee of 13 members were also chosen and were tasked to draft its constitution. The Protem Committee later called for a General Meeting on 25th December 1957 to officiate its formation. At this General Meeting, the 13 members of the protem committee were elected to manage the new association. On 2nd September 1958 the Constitution of Muhammadiyah was sent to the Registrar of Societies for approval.
Praise be to ALLAH, MUHAMMADIYAH was registered as a lawful association and published in the Government Gazette Notification No. 2273. On 7th June 1989, the association was officially registered as a Welfare Organization under the Charities Act, gazetted in Notification No. 0659. From its very birth, Muhammadiyah has been doing missionary work that upholds the principle of "enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil " through its Educational, Welfare and numerous activities throughout Singapore.
